Cardiac Function in Permanent High-Altitude Inhabitants of the Zanskar
In the summer of 2022 the ATMA team worked alongside the Ladakh Institute of Prevention to conduct a medical camp in the Zanskar valley where over 200 people received free medical care, diagnostics and treatment.
Data was also collected during this camp to allow us to determine how we might best support those who live in these remote, high-altitude regions of the world (ethical approval obtained by the local health authority). This study examined how life in the low oxygen environment of high altitude impacts cardiac function and how this differs to adaptation in other high-altitude groups around the world. This project was selected for presentation at the prestigious International Conference on Emergency Medicine (ICEM) in Amsterdam in June 2023. The presentation was well received and a preliminary report of our research can be found attached (click for PDF). The team is now working hard on drafting a manuscript for publication. As always, none of this work would happen without the support of every single one of you - so thank you! |
