access to healthcare in the himalayas: a case study on tribal areas of himachal pradesh
In the summer of 2012, the ATMA Research Team conducted a study to examine how access to healthcare is affected by life in remote, sparsely populated mountain environments. Researchers travelled to remote regions in the Indian Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh and surveyed local residents regarding geographic and economic obstacles that may prevent them from accessing primary healthcare.
The results of this study, which has never before been conducted, could help researchers and policy analysts understand how healthcare is affected in these regions. This, in turn, will allow them to develop strategies for providing high-quality, affordable healthcare to people in mountain communities around the world. The findings of this research project were presented at the University of Calgary 7th Annual Leaders in Medicine Symposium where it was well received, winning the best presentation award. A preliminary report of our research can be found on the right. |
